U.S. Representative: Schilling Begged to Testify

An anonymous U.S. Representative revealed that the subpoena issued to Curt Schilling by the House Government Reform Sub-Committee was the result of faxes and phone calls by the Red Sox pitcher to government officials, begging for his inclusion.

In one of the first faxes, Schilling stated that he felt his participation in the hearings was “in the best interests of baseball and the country.” After not receiving a response, Schilling began a fax campaign to right-wing conservative representatives, stating that “God wants me to do this, and we all know what an angry God can be like.”

“Somehow Schilling got wind of this, and our phones wouldn’t stop ringing,” the rep said. “He kept saying that he knew a lot about steroids, and would reveal exciting new items if he were called to testify. He also asked a lot of questions about the set up of the room, camera angle, and what networks were going to be covering the hearings.”

Schilling also faxed a “recommended agenda” for the hearings to the Congressional Sub-Committee. Some of those agenda items—“The Red Sox opener: to Start or Not to Start?,” and “The Role of the Ankle Ligament in Determining Heroism”—were deleted because the subcommittee felt they were off-topic.

Schilling’s soft, cheeseburger frame will certainly seem odd among his more heavily muscled fellow testifiers. “I hope he doesn’t say he used steroids,” said another rep. “I’ll have a hard time keeping a straight face.”

There were separate reports, not yet verified, that Schilling had contacted NBC about creating a reality TV show around his testimony, titled, “From Fenway to Washington: A Day in the Life of Curt Schilling.”

Clearly, Schilling’s inclusion in the testimony raises the profile of the hearings.

“He’s very excited,” said the rep. “Hopefully he’ll be prepared to help us solve this problem. Right now, though, he keeps asking me if Italian suits make him look fat. Like I could tell.”
