It wasn’t the first time that Candy Miller had been arrested, but it turned out to be the last.

The 34 year old prostitute was picked up by police for soliciting sex near the Holland Tunnel late Tuesday night, the ninth time she’d been arrested, according to police records. What followed, though, was anything but ordinary for the struggling drug addict from New Jersey.

Miller was processed at the Criminal Courthouse a half hour before the arrival of Missy Beattie, Cindy Sheehan, Medea Benjamin, and Patti Ackerman, CodePink members who’d been arrested for obstructing the entrance to the U.S. Mission to the UN that same evening. That Miller would be forced to endure an evening with the four anti-war protesters would prove tragic.

Police believe a number of incidents might have pushed Miller over the edge.

“Maybe it was the group rendition of ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,’” said Corrections Officer Pat Eichner. “Or the constant references to their cell mates as ‘sisters.’ Or maybe it was the three act play they put on, entitled, ‘You Aren’t Poor, You’re Economically Marginalized.’ I mean, take your pick. You could see the life slip out of the other inmates. They were pressed up against the bars, begging to see their attorneys.”

“Candy must have just reached her break point.”
